On June 3, 2024, at the beginning of the Randolph County Board of Commissioners meeting, Senator Dave Craven recognized Sgt. Cody Jordan for advocating for a change in the law, after discovering an issue in the existing domestic violence protection laws when the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to a roadside dispute that ended up being a domestic violence investigation. In February 2022, deputies responded to assist the NC State Highway Patrol with the call. The woman had already obtained a protective order against the man involved, but the order had expired while awaiting a court date to have it renewed. She had petitioned the courts in time, but due to backlogs, the hearing date was set beyond the date on the protective order creating a gap in protection. This limited the deputy’s ability to mediate the matter.
Sgt. Jordan continued to work with and seek guidance from lawmakers on addressing this issue to protect domestic violence victims if this were to happen again. Sen. Dave Craven was contacted and the issued was discussed. He was presented the suggested changes and became one of the sponsors of House Bill 615, https://www.ncleg.gov/Sessions/2021/Bills/Senate/PDF/S836v1.pdf, now known as "Jordan's Law."
