During the January 5th investigation, another substance that could not be identified at the time was sent to the SBI lab for further analysis. On June 30, 2023, the analyst results were received, and the unidentified substance was determined to be fentanyl. Probable cause was found for a charge of felony possession of schedule II-controlled substance and a warrant for arrest was issued for Carolyn Ashley Freeman, the offender in this incident. On October 18, 2023, Detectives with the Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Freeman. She was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center. No bond was given due to the Pre-Trial Integrity Act. A first appearance was set for October 20, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.

On January 5, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Old NC Hwy 49 S., Asheboro. The driver, identified as Carolyn Ashley Freeman, had suspended driving privileges and was issued a traffic citation.
The passenger was identified as Melissa Dawn Edmondson, who is on probation in Randolph County. During a subsequent search, methamphetamine, schedule IV controlled substance (benzodiazepines) and paraphernalia were located.
Both were arrested and transported to Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for the charges of felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia against Edmondson and misdemeanor simple possession schedule IV controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia against Freeman. Each defendant was provided a written promise to appear along with a district court date of January 30, 2023.
