On October 18, 2023, Randolph County Detention Center staff and nurse were assaulted by inmate John Anthony Gieb. A detention officer was assisting the detention center nurse with the medication disbursement when they observed Gieb abnormal. They entered the cell to medically evaluate him. Upon approach, Gieb pulled away and appeared to have seizure-like episodes. While awaiting EMS, he became combative and was retrained after he assaulted the nurse and multiple officers.
Following hospital evaluation, it was determined there was nothing medically wrong with Gieb and he was returned to the detention center.
Following an investigation, Gieb was taken before the magistrate, who found probable cause for felony assault causing physical injury to a detention employee and misdemeanor assault on a government official/employee. Bond was denied and a first appearance was set for October 24, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
