On January 19, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Whitt Hunt Rd., Pleasant Garden, in reference to discharging firearms. While enroute, Randolph County Communications advised that the caller reported that a dog had been shot by their landlord John David Whitt. Upon arrival, the Deputy observed the dog, which was still alive, lying in a driveway. Randolph County Animal Services responded to assist in the investigation. They were unable to locate Whitt for further investigation at that time.
On January 20, 2024, Animal Services advised that the dog had succumbed to its injuries and that their investigation was complete.
Charges were sought against Whitt and the magistrate found probable cause in the case and issued a warrant for arrest for felony cruelty to animals against Whitt.
On January 24, 2024, Whitt was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served the warrant. He was not issued a $15,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for January 19, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
