On February 12, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff's Office responded to a burglary in progress on Lock Highland Ct. in Climax. Upon arrival, deputies observed broken windows in the residence. The victims and a witness reported that a male subject had broken into the residence through a back window, stolen a cell phone from one of the victims, and then left through a different window in the sunroom. Deputies were able to track the suspect and apprehend him in the area of Old Red Cross Rd. and NC Hwy 22, where the cell phone was located in his possession. The subject, identified as Michael Trevor Smart, was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony first-degree burglary, felony larceny after breaking and entering, felony possession of stolen goods/property, and misdemeanor injury to real property. He was issued a $5,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for February 13, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
