On March 28, 2024, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to NC 74 westbound at Exit 71 B regarding a reported road rage incident. Upon arrival, the driver of a commercial vehicle reported that a passenger vehicle traveling NC 74 westbound came into contact with his vehicle, then brandished and fired a handgun at the victim.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Detectives responded to Exit 71 B to collect evidence. CSI Investigators recovered a projectile from the victim vehicle and collected video evidence from the incident.
Deputies located the suspect vehicle a short time later and the investigation was turned over to Criminal Investigations Division Detectives who executed a search warrant on the vehicle and residence of Charles Edward Roberts, Jr. Following the investigation, Roberts was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and felony discharge a weapon into an occupied vehicle, bond was denied. His first appearance has been set for April 1, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
