On December 29, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Randleman Police Department to meet with a victim in reference to fraud. Upon arrival, the victim stated that she had posted an ad on Facebook marketplace in an attempt to sell an iPad tablet. She received confirmation on an agreed amount from buyer Vernon Lee McCray, Jr. They met on December 27, 2023, at her residence and exchanged money for the tablet. On December 29th, she attempted to deposit the money and her bank made her aware that the bills she received were not legal tender and were counterfeit.
The deputy made contact with McCray via cellphone, and he denied the business transaction occurred. The victim was able to verify the suspect's identity through the Facebook profile that was utilized on the marketplace profile. The counterfeit bills were collected and placed into evidence. Warrants were obtained for the arrest of Vernon McCray, Jr. for felony obtaining property by false pretense and felony uttering a forged instrument.
On August 9, 2024, McCray was located in Cumberland County, arrested, and transported to the Cumberland County Detention Center where he was served the warrant for arrest. He was issued a $1,000 unsecured bond and his first court appearance was set for August 19, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
