On March 20, 2025, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop at Old Greensboro Rd. and Effie St., Randleman. A passenger in the vehicle, Matthew Raymond Lawson, had an active probation violation warrant and was placed under arrest. During the search to arrest, an unidentifiable substance was located. While being transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, he appeared to suffer from a narcotic overdose. Randolph County EMS responded and transported Lawson to Randolph Health for evaluation. While being checked in at the hospital, he stated that he had swallowed Heroin during the traffic stop. Once medically cleared, he was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of the heroin. Lawson was issued a $2,000 secured bond. He was also served his felony probation violation and received no bond. A first appearance was set for March 21, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
The unidentified substance has been sent to the State Crime Lab for identification. Additional charges may be forthcoming.
