On May 10, 2025, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a request for an agency assist from Chatham County Sheriff’s Office regarding a possible impaired driver traveling on NC Hwy 22 South into Randolph County. A deputy circulated the area, located a vehicle matching the description provided, and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center. During this time, it was discovered that the driver had initially given a false name and was identified as Lucio Mejia Catalan.
The magistrate found probable cause for felony identity theft, misdemeanor driving while license revoked - impaired revocation, misdemeanor reckless driving to endanger, misdemeanor open container after consuming alcohol 1st, misdemeanor driving while impaired, and misdemeanor resisting a public officer. The magistrate issued a $100,000 secured bond, and a first appearance was set for May 12, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
It was also found that Catalan was a previously deported felon from Mexico City. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on Catalan.
