On June 18, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to High Pine Church Rd., Asheboro, in reference to a vehicle theft. Communications advised the victim was following the stolen vehicle and provided a direction of travel. The deputy was able to intercept the vehicle as it ran the stop sign on High Pine Church Rd. and continued onto Hopewell Friends Rd. at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was initiated, but the driver of the stolen vehicle accelerated and attempted to flee. He continued through the stop sign coming off of Hopewell Friends Rd. and turned left onto Pisgah Covered Bridge Rd. The vehicle hit the brakes abruptly and took a sharp left turn onto Bailey Rd. The vehicle began to slow down and shortly after took a right turn onto Pearl Ln. The vehicle pulled into a driveway on Pearl Ln. The male driver, later identified as Douglas Edward Brigman, ran from the vehicle and onto the porch of a residence. Brigman was ordered off the porch multiple times to which he refused. Additional deputies arrived and he eventually walked to the deputies to talk about the incident and was detained.
Interviews with the owners of the stolen vehicle were conducted simultaneously.
Following the investigation, Brigman was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate found probable cause for felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, misdemeanor resist/delay/obstruct public officer, misdemeanor reckless driving, misdemeanor hit & run, misdemeanor speeding, misdemeanor damage to property x2, and failure to stop at a stop sign. The magistrate issued a $30,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for June 19, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
