On December 5, 2023, while investigating another matter on Clifton Dr., Archdale, a motorcycle traveling south on Clifton Drive with no operating headlight struck a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle in the rear. The operator, identified as Thurman Earl Sampson, came to rest in front of the vehicle. EMS responded to evaluate his condition. NC Highway Patrol responded to investigate the accident.
While inspecting the damage to both vehicles, a shotgun was located strapped on the motorcycle. It was removed, made safe and secured in the trunk of the patrol vehicle.
During the investigation, it was discovered that Sampson is a convicted felon. Due to being a convicted felon, and locating a shotgun on the motorcycle, he was arrested. Ammunition was also seized from Sampson.
Following the evaluation by EMS, he was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for the charge of felony possession of a firearm by felon. He was issued a $5,000 unsecured bond. A first appearance was set for December 6, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
The NCSHP Trooper completed the crash investigation and stated he would be issuing multiple traffic citations.
