On September 2, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Hoover Hill Rd., Asheboro, in reference to found property. The victim reported locating his vehicle that had been reported stolen in Davidson County. The GPS tracker provided the truck's last known location to be on Hoover Hill Rd. on Wednesday, August 30, before being disconnected.
The truck in question, a 2007 black Kenworth with a Virginia license plate, was located on the back of the property behind the building along with items from the truck on the ground. Deputies observed that the VIN on the truck did not match the VIN that was printed on the metal near the door frame and others had been tampered with.
The owner of the property responded and stated that the truck was dropped at that location earlier in the week by Thomas Kay Wilt and that he had been there every day working on the truck and removing items. The on-call DMV officer was contacted and responded to the scene and was able to locate a VIN to identify the truck. It was returned to the victim.
Charges were sought against Thomas Kay Wilt and the magistrate found probable cause and granted a warrant for arrest on the charges of Felony Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle and Misdemeanor Injury to Personal Property.
On December 7, 2023, Wilt was located in Guilford County, arrested, and transported to the Guilford County Detention Center where he was served the outstanding warrant. The magistrate issued a $1,500 unsecured bond and a first appearance was set for January 22, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
