On January 5, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop in the area of US Hwy 220 Business N. near Holder Inman Rd., Randleman. It was determined the vehicle was displaying a fictitious tag. The registered owner and passenger of the vehicle was John Michael Stevenson. While investigating the occupants further, it was found that the driver did not have a valid driver's license nor did Stevenson, and the vehicle was not shown to have valid insurance. Additional deputies responded to assist and upon arrival recognized Stevenson and advised they had responded to a call approximately an hour earlier where Stevenson was overdosing.
During a subsequent search, controlled substances and paraphernalia were located. Stevenson was advised he would not be arrested at this time due to the possibility of him re-overdosing, but charges would be forthcoming. An inventory was completed, and the vehicle was towed.
Charges were sought against Stevenson for felony possession of Schedule II controlled substance, felony maintain vehicle/dwelling for controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. The magistrate found probable cause and issued a warrant for arrest.
A citation was issued to the driver for driving without an operator’s license and the fictitious tag.
On January 17, 2024, Stevenson was apprehended by the Randolph County Criminal Apprehension Team hiding inside the attic of a residence on Brame Rd. in Greensboro. He was transported to Randolph County Detention Center where he went before the magistrate who issued a no bond and set the first appearance for January 18, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
