On March 25, 2024, at approximately 9:10 pm, a Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy initiated a traffic stop in the area of Kamerin St. and Caudle Rd., Randleman. The vehicle quickly turned into a driveway and turned off its headlights. A male quickly opened the driver's door and fled on foot behind the residence, leaving the door open and the vehicle running. A short foot pursuit ensued but for officer safety reasons, he went back to check for vehicle passengers. Responding units were given a description of the male and the clothing he was wearing. A Randleman Police Officer arrived and assisted with clearing the vehicle to confirm no one else was in same. Asheboro Police units and additional deputies arrived to assist in the search of the area but were unsuccessful in locating the subject. Deputies were able to collect video footage of the same subject walking south behind a residence in the area. An inventory of the vehicle was conducted before being towed, locating illegal substances, an open container of alcohol, and paraphernalia. During the investigation, the subject was identified as Jameal Shufon Matthews.
A short time later, Communications received a call from Matthews who wanted to report his vehicle stolen. Upon arrival, Matthews was wearing the clothing given in the description and captured on the video. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession of marijuana >0.5-1.5 oz., misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia, misdemeanor open container violation, misdemeanor driving while license revoked, and a window tinting violation and issued no bond.
