On April 17, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Dunbar Bridge Rd. and NC Hwy 49 S., Asheboro, for a report of a suspicious vehicle. Upon arrival, the vehicle was located in the roadway at the stop sign with the male driver asleep. After multiple attempts, the driver, later identified as Ayvy Martinez Arroyo, was awakened. The odor of marijuana was emitting from within the vehicle. Additional deputies responded to assist with the investigation. During a subsequent search, marijuana, paraphernalia, and several brick-like objects wrapped in plastic, believed to be an illegal narcotic substance, were located. Arroyo was placed under arrest for misdemeanor driving while license revoked, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia. He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was taken before the magistrate who found probable cause for the charges and issued a $1,500 secured bond with a first appearance court date set for April 17, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
The unknown substance was sent to the State Crime Lab for further testing.
On May 3, 2024, the State Crime Lab published its findings and identified the substance as methamphetamine; weighing 17 lbs. Charges were then issued for Arroyo for two counts of Felony Trafficking Methamphetamine.
On May 6, 2024, Arroyo was located by the Criminal Apprehension Team on Plummer St., Asheboro. He was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served his felony warrant. He was issued no bond and a first appearance was set for May 7, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
