On May 16, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Old State Hwy, Asheboro, in reference to a subject, identified as Jonathan Cass Carter, possibly stealing metal from an abandoned property. Upon arrival and investigation, Carter was located and advised to leave the property and not return.
Later, Communications reported that the property owner had called 911 and advised that Carter had been on the property again, loaded a wagon-style cart, and left with items. The victim was able to provide evidence of the incident. Deputies responded to Old State Hwy near 220 Bus. and located Carter with the wagon. During the investigation, Carter provided the deputy with a recycling receipt. Carter was placed under arrest and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony obtain property by false pretense and misdemeanor possession of stolen goods. He was issued a $2,500 secured bond. A first appearance was set for May 17, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
